We’ve finally found a campground we don’t exactly love. It’s loud, cramped, not well maintained (aka gross), the people are not friendly in the least, and you are basically paying a ridiculous campground fee to dry camp (boondock). They do have a few electric spots but those run the cost of a beachside hotel room. This is our first state campground experience in California and really hope it’s not an indication as to how they keep their parks.
Aside from the lack luster campground, we’ve really enjoyed exploring Encinitas and Carlsbad. They are both adorable little surf towns with a fun vibe. Folks here really do fit the surfer look which is fun and the parents look so um, young. But not in a teen mom way, more of a not wearing their mom jeans kind of way. I guess they are “hip” parents.
Being from Texas, we are use to beaches you can swim in without a full on wet suit. We have all kinds of beaches that are easy to get to, especially those good ol’ Mexican beaches. Those are warm and easy to jump right into. I can’t say the same for the California coast. The water is FROSTY! It’s kind of disappointing that you can’t just jump right in or even lay around in a swimsuit. This place is chilly, y’all. It feels like the outdoors are air conditioned all the time. Which, hey, isn’t a bad thing. I know back home right now it’s hot and humid. Have fun with that, Texas!
If you’re into bike riding, you can ride into either Carlsbad or Encinitas. Both are super close and in opposite directions. One popular beach in Encinitas is Moonlight Beach that has plenty of parking and is surrounded by some amazing homes. I like to play the game “what do you think those people do for a living?”.
There is a cute little store, Just Peachy, where you can buy fruits and veggies along with other organic fair along the 101 in Leucadia. We stop by on our bikes when we are headed back home to pick up items to make dinner or snacks for the beach. I scored some cherries for $1.99/lb which I thought was a great deal. Maybe not.
We went to the San Diego Zoo yesterday so stay tuned for a post about that experience.
